Whether you’re looking to soak up the sun (sometimes available!), take invigorating walks along the coast, spot seabirds and seals, or simply enjoy a seaside picnic, East Lothian’s beaches invite visitors to unwind and reconnect with nature. With dramatic backdrops of rolling dunes, distant islands and historic ruins, the coastline here blends scenic splendor with rich heritage - perfect for explorers and relaxation-seekers alike.

BELHAVEN BAY

  • Expansive golden sands with panoramic views of the North Sea and Bass Rock.
  • Famous for the whimsical “Bridge to Nowhere” which becomes submerged at high tide.
  • Set within the John Muir Country Park, offering rich wildlife and peaceful walking.
  • Try surfing or paddleboarding at Coast to Coast Surf School.
  • Visit the East Links Family Park nearby.
  • Also nearby is Dunbar Harbour, a historic fishing port with castle ruins and battery.
  • Season snack vans, car parks and toilets.

TYNINGHAME

  • Secluded, unspoilt stretch of beach west of Dunbar.
  • Dramatic cliffs and rugged rock formations ideal for scenic walks.
  • Bass Rock as a backdrop.
  • Mixed woodland for keeping drier on wet days.
  • Set within John Muir Country Park, offering rich wildlife and peaceful walking.
  • Small car park, which can fill up very quickly on busy days, advise going early. (£3) parking fee.

WHITESANDS & BARNS NESS

  • Whitesands is a secluded sandy bay 2 miles south of Dunbar. It is known for its find golden sand and gentle slope into the sea.
  • Stroll towards the striking Barns Ness Lighthouse or connect with the John Muir Way for longer hikes.
  • Known for its carboniferous limestone outcrops, fossil beds and geological diversity. Part of a site of special scientific interest.
  • Access via a single track road off the A1087 with a grass car park behind the beach (£3). Toilets and picnic tables.

SEACLIFF

  • Remote and peaceful sandy beach with breath-taking views of the Bass Rock and Tantallon Castle.
  • Home to the smallest harbour in the UK, carved into red sandstone in the 1890s.
  • Ideal for surfing, dog walking, rock pooling and quiet picnics.
  • Access via a private road near Auldhame off the A198 - look for the tight bend by the farm. Coin operated barrier (£5) leads to a grassy car park; note the steep steps down to the beach.

YELLOWCRAIG

  • A natural cove with golden sands and panoramic views of Fidra Island and its 1885 lighthouse - said to have inspired Treasure Island!
  • Surrounded by woodland, dunes and grassland, making it a haven for nature lovers.
  • Part of the John Muir Way, ideal for scenic walks and cycling.
  • Adventure playpark - great for children.
  • Spot seabirds like Puffins on Fidra Island.
  • Large car park with toilets, showers and picnic tables. 10 min drive from the house. £3 parking fee.

GULLANE

  • Sweeping golden sands and stunning views over the Firth of Forth, backed by grass-covered dunes offering secluded spots.
  • Ideal for sunbathing, walking, windsurfing and rock pooling.
  • Follow the coast right to Yellowcraig Beach or left into Aberlady Bay Nature Reserve.
  • Spot roe deer in the dunes.
  • Dedicated parking, toilets and a viewing platform. £3 parking fee.
  • Seasonal ice cream van.
